Rover
Rover was formed in 1878 in Britain and initially produced bicycle components until it moved into manufacturing cars in 1904. The company developed the Land Rover and added this to the range in 1947. In 1967 the company was absorbed by Leyland Motor Corporation and went through several reincarnations and major changes with nationalization, privatization and mergers and take-overs. The Rover brand continued to operate until the company was sold to BMW Group.

The sale of Rover to BMW led to a revival in the company’s fortunes – financial backing of BMW combined with technical expertise and research from Honda led to the development of several successful mid-range cars.

In 2000, BMW sold Rover to the Phoenix Corporation who established MG Rover (MG being the classic brand for British sports cars which ended in the early 1970’s). The company ceased all production in 2005 when it declared bankruptcy and Ford bought the rights to the Rover name for use with the Land Rover model. In 2008, Ford reached an agreement with Tata Motors of India which transfers the Rover marquee to that company but as yet, there are still no cars in production.
